How Does Solar Work In Utah?

Net Metering Policies in Utah

Rocky Mountain Power (RMP) customers are currently in a “transition” phase between a recently closed Net Electric Metering (NEM) program and a new program being worked out by RMP and the Utah Public Service Commission.

  • These “transition plan” customers are still compensated for excess energy, similar to net metering, but not on a 1:1 basis as in true net metering. As of 2021, customers receive a credit rate of about 6 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), or roughly half of the retail rate.

  • Utahans await details about the next iteration of solar rate programming with RMP. This program is intended to be based on the fair market value of distributed, solar-generated energy.

Solar Incentives In Utah

The Solar Investment Tax Credit is a federal incentive that allows you to deduct 30% of the total system cost from your federal taxes. The tax credit can be carried forward to ensure homeowners can take advantage of the full incentive over multiple tax years if needed. Learn more about this incentive here.

Available Incentives Beyond Federal Tax Incentive:

For a Limited Time: Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit

If you install solar on your home, the state government will give you a credit when you file your income taxes to reduce your solar costs. The Utah state tax credit is in the process of being phased out, so don’t delay! In 2022, the maximum tax credit will be $800. In 2023, the maximum tax credit will be $400. For installations after December 31, 2023, there will not be a tax credit available for solar PV.. That’s in addition to the 26% federal tax credit for solar!

Utah Solar Easement Law

This law ensures that you as a homeowner can work with neighbors to make sure that nothing shades your solar panel system while the sun is shining. Utah’s solar rights law prevents local zoning authorities from prohibiting the installation of solar panels on your home.
